PB Sustainability Mission

PB Sustainability Brochure thumbnail
pdf file PB Sustainability Brochure [1MB]

We are committed to a "strategy of change" - change from business as usual to respecting the entire environment of where and how we build projects.

You and your colleagues are at work on projects worldwide that incorporate sustainability into the planning, design, and construction of all types of infrastructure.

Designers are applying the principles of "green" design to buildings and transportation infrastructure to reduce use of energy and other resources. Power engineering professionals use their extensive experience in developing alternative sources of energy - including wind, solar, hydro and geothermal - as well as retrofitting conventional power facilities to make them more efficient and reduce emissions. Planners and designers integrate transportation technologies and systems with land use strategies to reduce reliance on the car and create vibrant, livable communities centered on public transit.

We recognize that a commitment to sustainability demands constant innovation and a willingness to question assumptions and past practices. With the ideal of a better world for future generations as our goal, we join forces with our clients to create infrastructure that achieves today's social and economic objectives, while conserving the natural environment and addressing similar needs of the future.

PB EMS Requirements

PB and ISO 14000 - Environmental Management Systems

PB Americas is committed to establishing, implementing, and maintaining an Environmental Management System that conforms to International Standards Organization, ISO, Standard 14001. The system will provide the framework to fulfill Americas' environmental responsibilities.

PB ISO 14000 Experience

PB understands:

  • All the aspects of implementing an EMS within the existing management methods and processes of an organization
  • The regulatory and engineering elements of developing a regulatory compliance baseline and identifying a life-cycle analysis of products or services
  • The process of ISO certification, since our operations are ISO 9001:2000 certified and the EMS program uses the Quality System where appropriate

Our experience includes assisting organizations in:

  • Developing an environmental policy
  • Specifying objectives and targets
  • Implementing an EMS
  • Monitoring and measuring program results
  • Reviewing the program to ensure continual improvement
  • Designing seminars to assist participants in the necessary requirements to become ISO 14000 certified through third-party certification or improving the sustainable practices within the industry
  • Developing a hand-held software program for auditing
  • Compliance with:
    • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
    • Clean Air Act
    • Hazardous Material Transportation Act
    • Clean Water Act
    • Environmental maintenance requirements

Environmental Auditing:

  • Preparing electronic checklist for compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Providing certified auditors for third-party audits or in-house training
  • Integrating multiple reporting requirements

Internally, PB has established EMS capabilities that include:

  • Top management commitment
  • Setting an environmental policy
  • Continually measuring and improving its environmental program
  • Internal and external communicating its EMS Program
  • Defining and documenting its environmental performance
  • Conducting Internal reviews and compliance audits
  • Setting environmental targets and objectives appropriate to the scale of its projects
  • Identifying environmental aspects and the impact of the organization's activities, products, and services on those aspects
  • Identifying and maintaining access to legal and all other requirements that apply to the environmental aspects of the activities, products, and services
  • Setting targets and objectives the organization can use as environmental performance indicators such as:
    • Locating offices close to public transportation
    • Establishing employee run "Green Teams" to enhance the PB office environmental practices
    • Documenting and practicing emergency preparedness and evacuation
    • Calculating the percent of waste recycled
    • Identifying specific types and quantities of pollutants
    • Identifying acres of land to be set aside for wildlife habitat
    • Tracking regulatory requirement changes

PB's external capabilities are applicable to:

  • Compliance monitoring programs that integrate O&M and environmental requirements
  • Gap analysis services (i.e., self-assessment and self-declaration)
  • Baseline assessments and template preparation for audits, communications - external and internal, chemical tracking, identification of objectives, document controls, and regulatory compliance.
