Sustainable Engineering Process
At the beginning of a project, optimism prevails regarding achievement of aspirations. It is up to the project management and client management team to understand how to translate these ambitions into realistic goals and measureable benchmarks, and to respect the tremendous importance of these goals to the client. These goals represent promises to constituents, contractual obligations with funders, and personal philosophies.
Wanting a blue sky takes more than just saying it. It takes a clear plan that covers the life of the project. Project management must check in over the life of the project to ensure that the initial goals and policies are being carried out.
How do you ensure adherence? It comes down to tracking, and building checks into the project program. LEED-registered buildings do not just happen on their own. They are systematically documented and tracked. The same principle applies to any project.
Performing a gap analysis at key stages of project development will highlight areas where practices are failing to meet the milestones set in initial planning.
