Sustainable Engineering Process

Minimize Construction Impacts

What Is It?

Although minimization of construction impacts is a fundamental of highway construction in the NEPA era, the greater the creativity applied, the application of sustainability considerations, enhances the basic approach to construction impacts. Can the construction laydown areas be consolidated? Can deliveries be carefully timed to minimize impacts on the neighborhoods? Can deliveries be made to minimize carbon emissions? Although engineers are constantly thinking about means to minimize construction impacts and improve efficiency, in terms of sustainability, consider the wider environment in which you are operating and consider innovative ways to minimize construction impacts.

Noise barriers, fencing, solar panel fencing, there are a host of techniques to consider as you develop your plan. These are likely to be in coordination with environmental planning, and commitments made to the public and agency stakeholders earlier in the project development process.
