Sustainability Principles for Corridor Selection (Highway or Transit)

What Is It?

Corridor or large-area plans can be executed in a manner that embeds sustainability. Sustainability principles generally consider protecting, maintaining, and restoring environmental assets, providing solutions appropriate to the context and with comprehensive stakeholder involvement and communication.

At a more fundamental planning level, municipalities have been articulating principles of sustainable corridor planning in their long-term planning documents. Listed below are a set of ten principles from a Australian transport project.

  • Principle 1 - Establish a shared vision.
  • Principle 2 - Forge a co-ordinated framework.
  • Principle 3 - Maximize civic engagement.
  • Principle 4 - Define targeted outcomes for specific places and times.
  • Principle 5 - Clearly define how resources are to be used.
  • Principle 6 - Demonstrate the best use of our collective resources, including existing resources
  • Principle 7 - Adhere to and promote good governance
  • Principle 8 - Anticipate and address financing hurdles
  • Principle 9 - Strive for and enhance delivery efficiency
  • Principle 10 - Plans must include transparent review and revision cycles.
