Mass Transit

Bangalore Metro

Bangalore, India

Client: Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL)

Parsons Brinckerhoff Role: Project and Construction Management

Bangalore Metro
A major program to construct a mass rapid transit system is under way in Bangalore, to relieve traffic congestion, facilitate economic growth, and provide a clean, efficient, and safe means of transport in the rapidly growing city. Construction of the system, known as “Namma Metro” or “Our Metro,” began in June 2007.

Including portions that are elevated, at grade, and underground, Phase 1 of the system will be 25 miles (42 kilometers) long and is expected to be completed by the end of 2014. The first section of the system, a 4-mile (7-kilometer) line that connects the center of the city with its eastern suburbs, opened on October 20, 2011.

As part of an international consortium, Parsons Brinckerhoff is providing general consultancy services to the client including project and construction management, design services, tendering and testing, and commissioning. Some of Parsons Brinckerhoff’s specific services include: rail systems interface and integration management; safety assurance; tunnel ventilation and environmental control; station architecture; automatic fare collection system; construction safety; illumination: and lifts and escalators.

The program’s strong commitment to sustainability has led to the use of regenerative braking to derive savings in traction power and to reduce heat loads in tunnels, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Transit is not simply a transportation mode; it is a community-building tool.  Transit influences investment decisions and fosters economic development and revitalization.  Thriving communities become burdened by their own prosperity when transportation improvements do not keep pace with a booming economy and surging development.  Properly addressing congestion is fundamental to a region’s continued economic strength and its appeal to residents, businesses, and visitors.

Successful implementation of transit and rail projects depends on an understanding of how developers operate; how to adapt to changing political realities; and how to work with public agencies, private ventures, and local communities.

Parsons Brinckerhoff helps transportation agencies plan, design and manage the construction of all forms of mass transit—heavy and light rail, streetcars and people movers, and bus rapid transit.  We combine our expertise in engineering design and construction-phase services with strategic consulting, land use planning, and program management to provide clients with comprehensive support from inception through operations.  Our experience in transit-oriented development aids clients in fostering the creation of vibrant, livable communities centered on transit, and we offer strategies to make transportation infrastructure truly sustainable.

Transit clients are increasingly seeking more than engineering:  they’re seeking strategic solutions for better ways of doing things.  Our job is to help them achieve their vision.  Drawing on a pool of specialists located in numerous locations across the globe, Parsons Brinckerhoff’s transit experts offer support in the various disciplines that are key to achieving successful mass transit and public transportation projects.
