Hong Kong, China
Client: Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government
Parsons Brinckerhoff Role: Mechanical/Electrical Consultant
The Hong Kong Schools Improvement Program is a government initiative to improve the physical environment of approximately 1,000 secondary and primary schools in Hong Kong by providing additional facilities and upgrading structural, mechanical and electrical systems. Due to the large number of schools involved, the project was completed in five phases over an 11-year period. Parsons Brinckerhoff's role as mechanical/electrical consultant included more than 100 schools with a total construction value exceeding $200 million.
The scope of services varied from school to school, depending on the original design and site conditions of the specific facility. However, in general, work involved: renovating existing facilities (classrooms, sports facilities, staff rooms, mechanical/electrical system upgrades, and structural improvements); adding new buildings and facilities (including computer rooms, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, etc.); upgrading facilities to include provisions for the handicapped; adding air conditioning and elevators; and utility relocations to accommodate changes in school layout.
