Mesaieed Independent Power Project
The US$2.3 billion Mesaieed Power Plant will deliver electricity to meet the growing demand of Qatar’s residents, while substantially reducing nitrogen oxide emissions through the use of selective catalytic reduction technology. The 2,000-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine plant is one of the largest plants of its type in Qatar.

In 2007, Kahramaa (The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation) looked to private investors to help build an independent power project to increase the country’s electricity provision and stimulate growth. An agreement was signed with the Mesaieed Power Company (M Power) to develop the Mesaieed plant; the electricity it produces will be sold to Kahramaa under the terms of a 25-year power purchase agreement. M Power subsequently engaged Parsons Brinckerhoff to serve as Owner’s Engineer; the firm’s services include project management, design review, works inspections, and supervision of the engineer-procure-construct (EPC) contractor’s construction and commissioning. Parsons Brinckerhoff staff in diverse locations contributed their expertise to deliver the project successfully.

The Mesaieed plant comprises three power blocks, each consisting of two gas turbine generators, two heat recovery steam generators, and a steam turbine generator. Two gas turbines operating in open cycle are also provided. Three substations feed power to Qatar’s power grid. The power plant was inaugurated in May 2010 by His Highness Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.
