A Safer Future for All Australians
|
Radioactive materials are used in medical, industrial, agricultural and scientific industries around the world. The waste produced by radioactive materials can be dangerous, and must be disposed of with extreme care. Australia's low-level and short-lived intermediate-level radioactive waste is stored at more than 100 locations nationwide. These facilities were not necessarily meant to store nuclear waste, and many of them have reached capacity. The Australian government decided it was time to find a secure, safe, centralized and long-term solution.
PB was enlisted to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) on a proposed National Radioactive Waste Repository. Special considerations included environmental health and safety, radiation risks, land use and activity, sustainability, facility design and location, transport of waste material to the site from across the country, and long-term management and operation of the repository, including decommissioning.
