Manchester Metrolink
Metrolink, Greater Manchester’s tramway system, is undergoing a major expansion in response to the region’s growth. The program includes system upgrades and four new lines to serve towns and communities in the Manchester region.

Originally opened in 1992, the system ran from Bury to Altrincham, through the City Centre, and was later extended to include the Eccles Line. Phase 3A will feature the expansion of the network north, east and south of the City Centre, adding 20 miles (32 kilometers) of new track and 27 new service stops to the existing 23-mile (37-kilometer) system. The project’s longest stretch is a 13.7-mile (22-kilometer) extension to Oldham and Rochdale, which will replace the existing suburban railway line that links the two towns with Manchester.

Parsons Brinckerhoff provided engineering and design services for Phases 1 and 2 and, as delivery partner, is providing program and project management support to GMPTE for Phase 3A. Services for Phase 3A include procurement and commercial management; project controls; risk and value management; engineering and design management; construction management; and stakeholder communications.

When the new lines begin passenger service in 2011 and 2012, it is expected that Metrolink ridership will increase from 20 million to 33 million passengers, relieving local roads of five million car journeys each year. The number of daily Metrolink trips is expected to increase from 55,500 to more than 90,000.
